If you're travelling independently or want transport only (no activity), a private taxi is the most flexible option. Marrakech has two types of taxis: petits taxis (small, city limits only) and grands taxis (larger, can go to Agafay).
- Petit taxi: Cannot go to Agafay — they are legally restricted to the city perimeter. Do not attempt this.
- Grand taxi: Can travel to Agafay. Negotiate the price before departure. Standard rate: 250–300 MAD (€25–30) one-way.
- Round-trip with waiting: 500–600 MAD (€50–60) for the driver to wait at your camp for 3–4 hours.
- Where to find grand taxis: Bab Doukkala station, Place du 16 Novembre (Gueliz), or ask your riad reception to call one.
Grand taxis in Marrakech do not use meters for out-of-city trips. The price is 100% negotiated. If a driver names a price over 400 MAD for a one-way trip, negotiate firmly — 250–300 MAD is the correct rate. Always confirm the price covers the full journey to your specific camp or activity point.
Option 3: Standalone Private Transfer
If you need transport only — for example to reach an overnight camp without booking activities — standalone private transfers are available from several Marrakech operators. Prices are fixed per vehicle (not per person), which makes them cost-effective for groups of 3+.

Option 4: Self-Drive to Agafay Desert
Renting a car in Marrakech and driving to Agafay yourself is a good option if you're road-tripping Morocco or want maximum flexibility for timing. The drive is straightforward.
Route from Marrakech to Agafay Desert
- From Jemaa el-Fna: head south on Avenue Mohammed VI, then take Route d'Amizmiz (R203) southwest.
- After 25 km on the R203, turn right at the signs for Lalla Takerkoust or Agafay.
- GPS coordinates for the central Agafay area: 31.4200, -8.1800. Your specific camp will have its own GPS.
- Total drive: 35 km, approximately 40–45 minutes from city centre.
The road from Marrakech to Agafay is well-paved but poorly lit after sunset. Livestock often cross rural roads at night. If returning after a dinner show or sunset activity, drive slowly and avoid high beams on curves. We recommend having a driver rather than self-driving for late evening returns.
Transfer from Marrakech Airport to Agafay
Marrakech Menara Airport (IATA: RAK) is the closest international airport to the Agafay Desert — only 32–35 km and 35–40 minutes by car. It is actually closer to Agafay than to the Medina.
If you land at RAK and head directly to Agafay (e.g. for an overnight camp before exploring Marrakech), this is the most efficient routing. Aziz Agafay Desert offers free airport pickup when you book any activity — the driver meets you at arrivals with a name board and adjusts for flight delays automatically.
